Notes from the video:

- universal rights for all people regardless of race

- African Americans were barred from public places: movie theatres, restaurants, separate neighbourhoods -> segregation 

- it was wide spread

- 1951: Linda Brown was barred from attending the school closest to her home and had to all the way across town => her father and other people sued the school board. 1954: it was said to be unconstitutional and schools were told to accept everyone.

- new laws were to be enforced

- 1955: Rosa Parks took a seat in the bus and refused to give it up for white passengers.

- usual situation in most of the South

- Joan Robinson and Martin Luther King organised the boycott of the city bus system. They chose to walk rather than submit to an unfair situation

- segregated buses were banned

- peaceful sit-ins

- peaceful protests met with violence

- people often feel threatened by change

- Aug 28th 1963, March on Washington + speech "I have a Dream" MLK

Civil Rights Act of 1964: it outlawed all discrimination based on race, religion, sex or ethnicity

- years of struggle before they were really enforced

- African American continued to face discrimination up to today

- women, immigrants, gay and transgenders people are still struggling to be treated with dignity

- history is on their side
