Axis 2 - Generations living together

Lesson 1

In groups of 4, do the following activity: for each title, figure out what synopsis and trailer it matches with. Fill in the table below.

What is the title of the unit? (FAMILY MATTERS).

In pairs and with the help of the vocabulary sheet above, pick out one TV show and present it to your classmates. You need to:

describe the plot
describe the family structure
don't use the title of the TV show or the name of the characters or give the date
you have 1 minute for your classmate to find which TV show you are talking about

When listening to the group presenting, add a comment next to the title about the family structure.

Discuss the differences and similarities you find between all the TV shows and explain how they can relate to the unit.

Give the definition of what you think a traditional and a modern family are.

Lesson 2

Have a look at the infographic, Facts about the American Family Today, houstonnationalinsurance.com, 2018, Shine Brighter, p.74.

Describe the infographic and the information it contains using the method and vocabulary seen in Axis 1, Lesson 5.

Discuss with the class.

Then do the grammar activities below.

Watch the video The Evolution of the American Family, 2020, Let's Meet Up, p.65.

Watch the first 20 seconds and give a definition of "nuclear family".

Then watch the video three times and take as many notes as you can. Organise your ideas, check with your neighbour and then answer the following questions:

Use numbers and dates to say when and why this expression appeared
Explain the reasons behind its evolution after 1965.

=> Create a timeline with the figures and dates from the video to show the evolution of the nuclear family.

Lesson 3

Have a look at the picture below:

Describe the picture following the method below and finish by explaining why the families represented here are modern families.

Read the text and check the hypotheses you've drawn from the picture analysis.

Create a family tree with the characters of this TV show and add key elements for each member (ex: Jay - has a younger wife with a teenage son).

Define what a modern family is and give other examples to illustrate your definition.

Lesson 4

In groups of 3, create an infographic summarizing the unit. You need:
