Unit 6

Lesson 1

Watch the video below and figure out the title of the unit: 1 word, 10 letters (DEVOLUTION)

Now make a list of all the countries mentioned and comment on the picture below.

What can you conclude?

Read the Unit Goals and find the problematic.

Lesson 2

Fill in the text with the words in the words bank.

Have a look at the picture below and listen to the podcast. Each student will then give one word they link to those two documents.

In pairs, write a short summary using all the words on the board on what you think this building is used for and how it works.

Divide the class into groups:

  1. England
  2. Scotland
  3. Northern Ireland
  4. Ireland
  5. Wales

In each group, you will research two elements: one part of the group will focus on the timeline (main events concerning its link with the UK) and the second part of the group will focus on the political aspect (how the country is represented).

You will then present your findings to your classmates:

  • with a Powerpoint presentation
  • with a clear cultural aspect
  • with a recap at the end

You will also prepare 4 questions with 4 different answers possible (underline the correct one) and give them to your teacher.

To help you: go onto this website rather than Wikipedia.

Lesson 3

Listen to the presentations and play the Kahoot game.

Lesson 4

Concentrate now on the aspect of Devolution in your country. What are the pros and the cons? Create two groups and work on each side of the debate.

Make a list and organise your speech.

Lesson 5

You are speaking during a session of the British Parliament: expose your point of view to the MPs and try to convince them.

To do so, you will stand in front of the class and students will stand for the MPs. On the right side is the vote in favour. On the left side is the vote against. You will have 7 minutes to convince them to vote in your favour.
