Unit 3

Lesson 1

Have a look at the title of the video:

"Port Townsend couple lives like Victorians despite criticism"

What do you think the video is going to show?

Watch the video below without the sound. Make a list of all the different things you see and draw hypotheses on what the video is about. Then figure out the title of the unit: 4 words, 16 letters (LIVING OFF THE GRID)

Check your hypotheses with the sound on. Read the Unit Goals and figure out the problematic.

Imagine an historical era you would have wanted to live in and explain why.

Lesson 2

First have a look at the two posters below. Describe them as much as you can.

You will now each receive a card. Try to place your word correctly in your text and then walk around the classroom to find the others and complete the text in its entirety.

To finish, complete the worksheet below.

Lesson 3

Divide the class into two groups. In pairs, describe the picture you have received using the table.

Then, exchange with an other pair about your picture and answer the first two questions on the worksheet.

Next, watch the video and take notes about :

  • the activities offered
  • ways people are encouraged to go "unplugged"
  • the reasons why people want to unplug

Finish the worksheet.

Then imagine a concept of unplugged vacations in the historical period chosen before and create the poster to attract the public.

It needs to have:

  • the name of your company (travel agency)
  • a catchphrase
  • a short description of your historical era
  • different types of stay (for different audience, different length of stay...)
  • a price (or a "from" "until")
  • a way to contact you
  • why your offer is the best on the market and what it will bring your client

Lesson 4

Watch the video and answer the questions on the worksheet.

Lesson 5 - Final Task

You are going on a vacation with your best friend for 2 weeks this summer. You chose one destination among those 3:

  • unplugged vacation
  • living with the Amish

You disagree on your destination and try to explain your point of view.
