Unit 4
Lesson 1
Listen to the audio below once and figure out the title of the unit: 2 words, 17 letters _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (PROMOTING SCIENCE).
Now, organise your notes, either in a mindmap or in a table. Listen to the audio a second time: define the topic, the different ideas and add information to them.
Before listening to the audio one last time, check with your neighbour that you have the same information. Use the last listening to check all your information and finalise your organisation. You will have 7 minutes to put all the information gathered in a way that will sum up the document (you can use bullet points if needed). Hand it in.
Then, fill in the blanks in the script.
Read the Unit Goals and create the problematic.
Lesson 2
In the script, highlight the different words you might need in the unit. Discuss your list with your neighbour and complete the table below.
Nouns | Adjectives | Verbs |
---|---|---|
Then divide the class into 4 groups.
Group 1:
Have a look at the Quizlet below and organise the words in different categories for your classmates respecting their lexical fields. Add the words from the script.
Group 2:
Match the science field with its definition and for each one find the name of a famous scientist who discovered something in that field. Create different ID cards for each field for your classmates to understand the differences.
Group 3:
Match the science job with its definition and try to define each colour for your classmates with a list of different jobs and examples.
Group 4:
Do the worksheets and read the grammar points on p. 238, 246 and 250. Then try to sum it up the best you can in order to give the tools to your classmates.
Present your findings to your classmates and give out a recap.
Lesson 3
Have a look at the title of the video. What do you think it is about?
Thousands March for Science in San Francisco, CBS, 2017
Write your different hypotheses in your copybook: type of document, different ideas. Then watch the video and take notes on things you hear and determine the number of parts you need to work on.
Check your hypotheses. During the second listening, add information on the reasons and the different point of views of the people interviewed.
Then, during your last listening, complete your notes and check the information already gathered.
To finish, check the information with your neighbour and then start writing your summary in French: don't forget to introduce the document first and then to describe each part.
Lesson 4
Have a look at the picture below. What do you see?
In your copybook, make a list of 7 words and order them from the most important to the least important. Then, check with your 3 other neighbours. Once you agree, switch groups and discuss your list until everyone has the same. From there, in one sentence explain what the picture represents.
Divide the class into two groups.
One group will be science deniers and the other group will be scientists. Then form groups of 3. Each group will receive different documents with different information. You will have to find arguments defending your point of view, then create a sign to go marching and there you'll meet the other group.
- Climate change
- Flat Earth
- World created in 4004 BCE
- Darwin's theory of evolution
- HIV and AIDS
- Smoking and cancer
Lesson 5
You are marching today to defend your opinion. Along your demonstration, you meet with the opposite team. Argue about your positions.
You need to bring out:
- different arguments
- listen to what is said and counteract it before advancing a new argument
- everyone needs to speak equally
To help you, have a look at the document below.
Lesson 6
Create groups of 3. Give yourself a number (1, 2 or 3) and then all the number 1 are going to work on a text, all the number 2 are going to work on a poster and all the number 3 are going to work on a video.
Number 2:
Number 3:
You have 15 minutes to take notes on your document. You need to have as much information as you can to bring back to your group.
Then, rejoin your group and share your notes. Create a poster to convince your classmates to go see the movie and what it is about.
Lesson 7 - Final Task
Create a leaflet to encourage new students to follow scientific studies.
To do so:
- make a list of the advantages of science: what it can do
- make a list of the problems science is facing today
- convince them to take up the science track with what they could do later (give examples)
- present 3 different science jobs/fields and famous people attached to them
GOOD LUCK!
