Unit 1

Lesson 1

  • Have a look at the two movie posters below and try to figure out the title of the unit (3 words, 21 letters : _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) NOLLYWOOD AND BOLLYWOOD

Batman Begins, by Christopher Nolan, 2005                           Ra One, by Anubhav Sinha, 2011

  • Without looking at the posters anymore, try to find 15 words or phrases describing them.
  • Then with the help of your neighbour, try to remember 3 similarities and 3 differences between the two posters. Once you're done, find elements which are typically Indian in the Ra One poster and typically American in the Batman poster and what elements make a movie poster.
  • Now half the class is going to watch the first video and the other half will watch the second one. Take notes and then, discuss your findings in order to be able to define what Bollywood is and its relationship with Hollywood.

To finish, have a look at the vocabulary mindmap (p.33) and try to find the title for the 6 different categories as well as other words you might need.

  1. production
  2. around the film
  3. after the release
  4. at the cinema
  5. genre
  6. money-wise

Lesson 2

Let's first concentrate on Bollywood movies.

In your house, have a look at the flashcards. Try to bring them together to build sentences in order to fill in the mind map below.

To check your work, listen to a reading of the text.

Lesson 3

Now that you know what makes a Bollywood movie, have a look at the two posters below.

In your house, choose one poster in order to describe it. One member will be in charge of the introduction, one will be in charge of the conclusion, 2 will be in charge of the description and one will be in charge of the analysis and hypotheses. Start with filling the table, and then organise your ideas in the right order. Focus your description on the elements that make those posters Bollywood movie posters.

 Introduction
Description
Analysis/Hypotheses
Conclusion

Then watch the two trailers for the movies and check your hypotheses again. Make a list of all the elements that are typically from Bollywood movies.

After his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman he is in love with, Devdas Mukherjee's life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain.

Consider what makes a movie poster: the different elements and its relation with the trailer.

Now, create your own Bollywood plot and create its movie poster.

Lesson 4

In groups of 3, you will receive three documents: one worksheet, one picture and one quote.

Start with talking about the quote and picture. Say what you know about those actresses and draw hypotheses on what they might be speaking about. Then, you will meet up with other group members and exchange about your documents.

Fill in the first part of the worksheet.

Then watch the videos and fill the rest of the document.

N. Kidman:

Aishwarya Raï:

Priyanka Chopra:

Divide the class into 8 groups. Each group will receive a document and some flashcards. Organise the flashcards in the right column (semantic field) and then go to the other groups in order to find the translation.

Now that you have different ways of saying "say", use the arguments you have written on your worksheet and write a paragraph relating what happens in the video WITHOUT using the same introductory verb twice.

Lesson 5

Read the document below before doing the activity:

Watch the video once without the sound. What can you say about it?

Now watch it with the sound on.

In groups of 3, dispatch the different mission:

  • one is in charge of the places mentioned and numbers
  • one is in charge of who is speaking and any person mentioned as well as who they are and where they come from
  • one is in charge of the content of the video

To help you, you can use the worksheet below:

Once you have listened to the document three times, rethink the informations you have written down and organise them in a retranscription in French.

Lesson 6

Divide the class into 4 columns. The first column will receive a text, the fourth column will listen to an audio.

You will have 15 minutes with your document. In that time, you will have to explain your document to your partner. Then you will all exchange your information for 7 minutes in the following order:
